Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) FAQs
What is Electronic Lien and Title (ELT)?
An electronic title is a title that exists only in electronic form and is a legal document of vehicle ownership, the same as a paper title. ELT enables the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and lending institutions to exchange vehicle and title information electronically via an electronic service provider.
How does the ELT service work?
Lienholders first enroll with a service provider. The same title documents required to apply for a paper title are also required for an electronic title. Lienholders must submit the paperwork to the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for electronic title as they would for a paper title. The documents are then handled and processed at the state DMV, similar to the paper title process, but instead of issuing a paper title certificate, an electronic notification will be sent. A paper title does not get printed. The state DMV transmits the electronic title records to the service provider and then relays the title record to the lienholder. Lienholders can log in, view, and manage their liens through the ELT service.
What are the key benefits of ELT?
The ELT system allows lienholders, both large and small, to reduce or eliminate the handling, storage, and mailing costs associated with paper titles by replacing them with electronic titles, benefitting in:
- Secure online storage
- Easier lien management
- Faster and more-secure releases
- Reduced paper and mailing costs
- Reduction in risk of title fraud
- Simplified processes
- Increased efficiency
- Better customer service
What happens when an Electronic Lien is satisfied?
When a lien is satisfied, the lienholder releases it electronically through their service provider. At that point, the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) prints and mails the lien-free title to the vehicle owner.
